David Thwaites is Professor of Epithelial Physiology in the Newcastle University Biosciences Institute within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. He completed his undergraduate studies at Newcastle University and PhD at Liverpool University. He returned to Newcastle as a postdoc, then held a Wellcome Trust Fellowship at Newcastle and a European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Fellowship at the University of Zürich. The major interests of his lab are structure-function relationships of eukaryote membrane transporters particularly SLC carriers with a focus on the role of proton-coupled nutrient and micronutrient transporters in transmembrane drug transport. He has been a Trustee and Council Member of The Physiological Society. He has served two terms on the editorial board of the British Journal of Pharmacology, has been guest editor of the gastrointestinal section of Current Opinion in Pharmacology, and contributes to the IUPHAR/BPS Guide to Pharmacology.
