Prof Williams qualified in Medicine in Trinity College Dublin in 1994. He was appointed consultant Clinical Pharmacologist and Stroke Physician in Aberdeen in 2002 and was appointed Associate Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Consultant Stroke Physician at Beaumont Hospital Dublin in 2009. He was awarded a PhD in 2002 for his work on pharmacoepidemiology. He is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Ireland and Edinburgh, The British Pharmacological Society and The British and Irish Hypertension Society. He has worked as a consultant stroke physician since 2002. His research interests include stroke medicine, platelet function, hypertenstion and prescribing. He is lead/Co-author on over 70-peer reviewed articles in the field of Clinical Pharmacology and cardiovascular medicine. He has served as Clinical Vice-President of the British Pharmacological Society between 2007-10 and is currently managing editor of the European journal of Clinical Pharmacology, and the Irish National Speciality Director of training for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In 2014 he was awarded the British Pharmacological Society GSK prize.
