Mike Armstrong was awarded a BSc in Applied Biology by Bath University in 1967 and a PhD in Pharmacology by London University in 1975 while employed at the Wellcome Research Laboratories. Within the international pharmaceutical industry he worked on drug discovery programs eventually being promoted to Vice President level. He was an invited speaker at symposia on cardiovascular drugs and on pharmacological methods in toxicology and has published widely in these areas. After his company's take over in 1994 he joined a fledgling biotechnology company in Lyon producing natural healthcare products. On returning to Edinburgh he helped create the Alexander Fleming Initiative of the University to support its research on antibiotics and advised NESTA on the merits of research ideas submitted for funding. A member of the Society since 1973 he was elected to Fellowship in 2005 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Biology and the University of Edinburgh.
