Tony Sampson read Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and gained a PhD in Pharmacology at King's College London. After jobs in London he moved to Southampton University in 1995, leading research into leukotrienes in asthma, allergy and aspirin intolerance. He directed the Allergy & Inflammation Research (AIR) division in 2002-05, relocating it into laboratories refurbished by a £10M Wellcome Trust grant. He was an editorial board member of the British Journal of Pharmacology and has led the Clinical Pharmacology group at Southampton since 2005. While leading Year 1 of the Medicine programme from 2011 to 2018 he won awards for teaching from the Vice-Chancellor and from the medical students. He was a trustee of the AAIR charity from 2006 to 2016. Professor Sampson is now the Director of Undergraduate Programmes in the Faculty of Medicine, the education lead for the School of Clinical & Experimental Sciences, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and an elected Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society. He is a co-author of recent editions of Medical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, which promotes an integrated approach to the learning of pharmacology and prescribing.
