I trained as an endothelial cell biologist, with a PhD from Cambridge. I led research teams at the Babraham Institute (1970-1983), and at the MRC Clinical Research Centre in Harrow (1983-1991). In 1991 I was appointed Professor of Vascular Biology (the first in the UK) at King's College London (KCL). Since 2010 I have been Associate Medical Director (Research) at the British Heart Foundation, retaining an emeritus Chair at KCL. I am a council member of the European Vascular Biology Organisation, and Chair of the European Society of Cardiology’s Council for Basic Cardiovascular Science. I was vice chairman of subpanel A1 (Cardiovascular) for RAE 2008 and a member of subpanel A1 (Clinical Medicine) in the follow-up 2014 REF. I was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2004 and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2006.
