Professor Kitchen is CEO of REF2020 Consulting and retired Emeritus Professor of Neuropharmacology at the University of Surrey. He is an elected fellow of the BPS and the Royal Society of Biology. At Surrey he was Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (2007-13) and also served terms as Dean and Head of the School of Biosciences and Medicine. He was Chair of the BPS Committee of Heads of Pharmacology, a Council and Finance Committee member and editor of the BJP. He has served on MRC and NC3Rs research grant panels as well as being founding President of the European Opioid Conference. He was a Sub-Panel member for two research assessment exercises (RAE2008 and REF2014). He has held research grants from major biomedical funders, including co-ordinating an €8.1m EC grant, supervised over 35 PhD students and published 200 research papers in leading journals in pharmacology and neuroscience.
