I worked for 30 years at the University of Liverpool initially as Senior Lecturer, Professor from 1984 and then as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences from 1991-1996. My research Interests were mainly in the clinical pharmacology of oral contraceptive steroids and drugs in tropical diseases ( notably onchocerciasis). I spent the last five years of my working life as Director of Health Care Education for the NHS in North West England. Having worked with Prof Sjoqvist in Stockholm for 18 months in 1973/4 I fostered a continuing link with his department and 40 years later I was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Karolinska Institute. With Prof Sjoqvist I helped to found the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics initially as Honorary Secretary and then as chairman from 2003 –2007. I have always been a keen advocate of closer links with our European colleagues.
