Primary professional setting:

I have a BSc (1st Class) in Pharmacology (University of Bath, 1980), a PhD in neuropharmacology (London Hospital Medical College, 1985) and a DSc in neuroscience/neurochemistry (Bath, 2000). From my PhD on with initial support as a Royal Society University Research Fellow until the mid 2000s I helped develop electrochemical techniques for measuring monoamines at microelectrodes in the brain. My main research focus was on dopamine in the context of Parkinson's. I wrote or co-wrote 3 books and some 100 reviews, papers and book chapters. On leaving academia as Reader in Neuropharmacology in the mid 2000s and following my diagnosis with Parkinson's, I have concentrated on patient advocacy and bridging the critical communication divide between academics and patients. I am an editorial board member of Journal of Parkinson's disease and Neurodegenerative Disease Management. I was editor-in-chief of On The Move, (an online Parkinson's patient magazine (2011-5) and I was/am founder of Parkinson's Movement and Parkinson's Inside Out. I have also published 6 books to date on my personal experience of Parkinson's. I like to think of my career in two parts – life with dopamine and life without.
