Following my PhD on neonatal rat temperature regulation at the Royal Free, I held research fellowships at Yale and Cambridge universities studying catecholamine pharmacology. I then joined the staff in Pharmacology at the (now) UCL School of Pharmacy where the focus of my research was on the pharmacology of GABA and other inhibitory amino acids, primarily by electrophysiological techniques. Over 100 full research papers have resulted and 18 research students have obtained PhDs. For the BPS, I served as an editor of BJP and on the committee of the Society and was Honorary Treasurer 1988-95. I also served on the Drug Nomenclature committee of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission. Subsequent to retirement from academia, I have held appointments in the NHS including non-executive director at Papworth Hospital FT, member of a NHS Research Ethics committee and governor at NW Anglia FT.
