Susan Brain carried out her BSc and PhD degrees in Pharmacology within the University of London, before developing an interest in vascular biology and inflammation during her postdoctoral years. Working with Prof Tim Williams FRS, she realised that the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide is a potent microvascular vasodilator. Her studies have since concentrated on identifying the sensory neurogenic component in cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. She is Professor in Pharmacology at King’s College London where she has headed the Section of Vascular Biology and Inflammation since 2005 and was Head of the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Education Dept 2011-2018. She has been a BPS Trustee and was Vice President Academic Affairs from 2003-2008. She is a REF UOA5 committee member (2014 and 2021). She has received the BPS Sandoz Prize (1989), the World Congress in Inflammation Woman Award (2003), the BPS AstraZeneca Women in Pharmacology Award (2010) and the Ariens Prize (2016).
