Primary professional setting:

Dr Carswell graduated in Pharmacy in 1991 from the University of Strathclyde and after her Foundation Pharmacy year at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, she graduated with a PhD in Neuropharmacology from the University of Glasgow in 1996. Her thesis investigated the role of excitotoxin-induced release of neuroprotective agents in the brain. This sparked her interest in neuroprotection and neurorepair in stroke. After 11 years as a PDRA and Independent Research Fellow in preclinical stroke research at the University of Glasgow, Dr Carswell took up a prestigious post at the University of Strathclyde as a John Anderson Research Lecturer in in vivo Biology, where she was promoted to Reader in 2021. Dr Carswell leads a small research group and several international projects addressing the global challenge of finding a treatment for stroke. Recent work involves investigating novel strategies of enhancing stem cell function in stroke and testing the efficacy of new therapeutic agents that target the blood-brain barrier after stroke. Over recent years, Dr Carswell has also put her research efforts into developing technologies using microfluidics, biomaterials and cerebral organoids that will help replace the use of animals in stroke research and help improve translation of stroke research to humans.
