Walter studied medicine in Basel (Switzerland), trained in medicine in Basel (Luzius Dettli) and clinical pharmacology in Basel (Ferenc Follath, Samuel Vozeh) and at Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA, USA) (Terrence F Blaschke, Brian B Hoffman). Since 1999 he is Chair of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology at Heidelberg University (Germany). His main research interests are individualization of drug therapy in patients with elimination organ dysfunction, genetic polymorphisms, and combination therapy (drug interactions); the use of microdosing strategies for risk assessment; prevention of medication errors with electronic decision support; and early clinical trials including first-in-human trials with biologicals and small molecules with a particular but not exclusive focus on cancer therapies.
