My research focuses on understanding the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly age and biological sex and investigating the treatment of depression in AD. I am a neuropharmacologist with a background in investigating therapeutics agents acting at 5-HT receptors for the treatment of anxiety and depression in vivo (PTY Merrell Dow in Strasbourg with John Fozard; PhD in Neuropharmacology with Charles Marsden, University of Nottingham; PDRA in Paris with Michel Hamon). I also worked in Cambridge on P2X and somatostatin receptor in the brain (Glaxo Institute of Applied Pharmacology with Pat Humphrey). Since coming to Cardiff University as Reader in Pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, in addition to my work on Alzheimer’s disease, I have developed animal models of asthma and COPD for testing novel drugs. I teach pharmacology to Pharmacy students, developing innovative translational tools to improve their understanding of drug development. I have developed new games for the Cardiff University Brain Games to teach people of all ages how their brain works and I do sessions on drug development for school children for Understanding Animal Research.
