Dr Edwards obtained his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1979 after graduating with Honours in Biochemistry from the University of Birmingham in 1975. Dr Edwards was appointed to a WHO Research Fellowship at the University of Liverpool in 1979 and until his retirement in 2016 he held teaching positions at the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Dr Edwards' research interests included drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics of antiparasitic drugs, particularly their role in the optimisation of drug treatment. He organised undergraduate courses in antimicrobial chemotherapy, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics.Dr Edwards initiated a number of overseas research collaborations in Australia, East and West Africa and South East Asia principally with support from the Wellcome Trust.Dr Edwards was a regular member of WHO advisory panels and was formerly an Executive Editor of British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology specialising in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics.
