Andrea Nistri was born in Florence where he obtained his medical degree at Florence University. After house jobs and military service he was Pharmacology lecturer at Florence University, and later MRC Fellow at McGill University, Montreal. He joined St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School where he was reader in Pharmacology and subsequently moved to Queen Mary Westfield College. He was appointed professor of Pharmacology at Pavia University (1994) and later professor of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA), Trieste, Italy where he remained up to his retirement (2017). His research comprises nearly 300 international publications and is focused on synaptic transmission in the brain and spinal cord. His recent research interests are pharmacological tools to prevent neuronal death in neurodegenerative disease models. He was editor of British Journal of Pharmacology, and associate editor of European Journal of Neuroscience, and currently of Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience.
