Esther O’Shea is Senior Pharmacology Lecturer at the Dept of Pharmacology, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and codirector of the UCM Neurobiology of Amphetamines and Alcohol research group. She studied pharmacy at Trinity College (Dublin) and obtained her PhD in the field of drugs of abuse at the Dept of Pharmacology of the School of Medicine (UCM). After postdoctoral training (1999-2001) with Prof. Charles Marsden (School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Nottingham) she returned to UCM with a Ramón y Cajal postdoctoral contract to continue her research on drugs of abuse. She teaches Pharmacology in several undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, has supervised 9 PhD and forms part of the committee overseeing training of junior pharmacology lecturers in the department. She has received prizes in Pharmacology (Young Investigator, Sociedad Española de Farmacología) and in Drugs of Abuse research (Drug Agency, CAM). She is the recipient of 10 publicly funded grants and has published over 65 indexed articles and several chapters in pharmacology textbooks. She joined the BPS in 2000 and served on the BJP Editorial board (2007-2011) as well as reviewing for several journals.
