Robert Sewell graduated in pharmacy and after a period in practice he obtained his PhD in neuropharmacology studying opioid receptor classification, analgesia and dependence at the University of Wales. He later developed an interest in non-receptor mediated membrane actions of benzodiazepines and spent two years at the University of Calgary exploring this field. He then researched occupational lung disease at Cardiff University and currently, in collaboration with groups in Russia and Sweden, he has focused on protein misfolding in neurodegenerative diseases, early biomarkers and neuroprotective agents. He has maintained a lasting research interest in pain studies and more recently this has centred on neuropathic pain. He is on several journal editorial boards and from 1996-2016 Professor Sewell was the director of postgraduate taught studies in clinical research at Cardiff. Throughout, he has been actively involved with undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacology teaching and the use of computers in the learning environment.
