I graduated from The School of Pharmacy, University of London with a B.Pharm (First Class Honours) in 1968, and a PhD from the Department of Pharmacology, University of Edinburgh in 1971. In this department, I was an ICI Research Fellow (1971-73), MRC Research Fellow (1973-5) and, from 1975, an academic staff member. My research area was ‘Prostaglandins in Reproduction’ especially the utero-ovarian axis. I was awarded the Sandoz Prize by the Society in 1977 for my work in identifying prostaglandin F2α as the uterine luteolytic hormone. I was awarded a D.Sc by Edinburgh University for my research studies in 1990. I was Head of Department from 1995-1998 and, following the merger of the preclinical departments, deputy Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences from 1998-2000. I retired in 2009 since when I have spent many happy hours on golf courses in and around Edinburgh, particularly with two of my former PhD students.
