Ken trained and practised as a consultant physician in internal medicine and diabetes in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, serving as Chair of the Professional Advisory Committee of the British Diabetic Association (now Diabetes UK) and on the Council of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. Evaluation of medicines has played a major role in Ken’s life for over 25 years, initially with his local Area Drugs & Therapeutics Committee and then as a founder member (2000) and later Chair (2008-11) of the Scottish Medicines Consortium. He served as Honorary Secretary of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and also on the Board of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine and its Ethical Issues Committee, and is now Chair of Trustees of the Drug Safety Research Unit in Southampton. For BPS, Ken has participated in several public involvement workshops around societal preferences for new medicines, spoke in the BPS-sponsored session at the World Congress of Pharmacology (2018) in Kyoto and has contributed to several Society responses to consultations. He continues to act as an expert advisor on Health Technology Assessment sin the NICE Scientific Advice programme.
