Alexander (Sandy) S Clanachan earned his BSc and PhD degrees in Pharmacology at the University of Glasgow and undertook post-doctoral training in the Department of Pharmacology, University of Alberta, Canada. He continued his academic career in the University of Alberta and was selected Chair of the Department of Pharmacology in 1999; this appointment was renewed in 2004 for another 5-year term. He is a long-standing member of the British Pharmacological Society and currently serves on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Pharmacology. He is a member, and Past-President of the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and has served as President of the Western Pharmacology Society and President of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies. He has co-authored more than 140 full-length papers and book chapters and is particularly proud of his graduate trainees who are now either Faculty Members in Universities or Research Scientists in the Pharmaceutical Industry.
