Time to Talk Day

Mental health awareness has increased over the last decade but the stigma of talking about it still lingers. It can be awkward to talk about mental health, but it does not have to be that way.

Time to Talk Day takes place on 4 February and invites participants to share their experiences with mental health. The event is not only for those who currently suffer from mental health problems but also individuals who are impacted via friends, family and colleagues. The aim is to open dialogue and crumble down the barriers to, and stigma of, talking about mental health.

This year’s theme for Time to Talk Day is ‘the power of small’, a theme which highlights how even the smallest of actions can snowball to make a big impact. We can start discussions about mental health by reaching out to those around us and discussing our current feelings. Sharing our personal experiences can help create understanding that not being OK is OK.  

The ongoing situation with the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our abilities to socialise. With the continued lockdown, feeling isolated can be compounded by staying at home all day. Occasions to grab a coffee with a friend or partake in group activities and socialise with others is not as easy as it used to be. With Time to Talk Day, the organisers aim to provide a platform for individuals to reach out to others and open conversations about mental health. If you are stuck on how to reach out or share your experience, the Time to Change website is an excellent resource and provides ample activities to help break the ice.

As the saying goes, Rome was not built in a day, and empowering people to share their experience with mental health, even if it is a brief chat, is a step in the right direction.
