Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, President

Welcome to the first President’s Message of 2020, and indeed, my first as President of the Society. I hope that you had an enjoyable break over the festive period and have returned to work or study refreshed and excited for the year ahead.

First, I would like to thank Professor Steve Hill for his leadership of the Society over the last two years, which was characterised by his warmth, sense of fun and innate ability to bring people together. Under his care the Society has continued to thrive, meeting our strategic objectives and growing as a pharmacology family. I would also like to congratulate all those elected to Council at the end of 2019, particularly Professor Clive Page on his election as President-Elect for 2020-21. And I also extend congratulations to the winners of our prizes and awards at Pharmacology 2019 - you can now view a full list of the recipients.

As we enter a new decade, the Society is also entering a new phase in its development, with exciting changes underway that will help us to increase our impact and reach. By now you will have read about our two-year alliance with ELRIG UK, a strategic collaboration that will create openings for scientific exchange and cooperation between industry, academia and the clinic. One of the ways that you will see this alliance in action is through our shared commitment to hosting joint and complementary meetings, so do make sure that you are subscribed to our email updates and follow our social media to take full advantage of these new opportunities.

We will welcome a new Chief Executive this year, with Rachel Lambert-Forsyth joining us in March. I look forward to the fresh energy and perspective she will bring, and I know you will make her feel part of the BPS family.

It’s also a year in which we will be offering innovative ways for members to find each other and to share resources and ideas. Our new online community is currently being trialled by a group of member volunteers, and I look forward to bringing you updates on its progress.

I wish you a happy new year and look forward to speaking and meeting with you soon.
