Your Society: First look at our membership survey

At the beginning of the year, we sent out our membership survey. The survey is a really important way for us to keep in touch with you about your experience of being part of the Society. It also helps us to find out how we can support you as your needs evolve and change.   In the coming months, we will be publishing the full results of the survey and sharing them with you, but I wanted to give you a taster of what we have heard so far. I hope that this will be interesting for those of you that gave your feedback, and for those that perhaps didn’t have a chance to complete this year’s survey. If you have experiences of being a member that you would like to share, remember that you can always get in touch to talk to us.

Our survey had two main themes; firstly, we wanted to know about your reasons for joining the Society, which benefits are important to you, and your experience of being part of the BPS. In the second part, we asked how COVID-19 had impacted your work and studies and what challenges you had faced during the pandemic.

You told us that one of the most important reasons for joining the Society is to keep up to date with developments in pharmacology. This is encouraging to hear, as lots of work goes into communicating the latest research and news, through all our digital platforms as well as through meetings, events, and training. For many members, being able to connect with each other and find support for career progression were also really valuable. Over 2020, we were delighted to bring you another way to keep in touch and to share ideas, and a third of survey respondents told us they had already engaged with our online Community. If you have not joined the Community yet, I encourage you to do so. It’s where you can continue conversations with other members from across the Society, contribute to forum discussions and join networks to dive deeper into hot topics and specific pharmacology disciplines.

Another important benefit of being a Society member is staying connected, and you also told us that discounted registration for our meetings was helpful too. You will have read in Munir’s blog last month about our online meetings, events, and training programme for 2021, and how we are looking forward to welcoming you back to face-to-face meetings as soon as it is safe and the guidance allows.

With regards to the pandemic, it is clear that a significant number of members have used their professional expertise to contribute to the COVID-19 response, and an equal number have also contributed outside of their professional activity. I won’t go into further detail here, as I want you to have the chance to read the full survey results when we publish them. Thank you to all of those who participated – your input helps us to keep on serving our membership. Our members make the Society the thriving community that it is.
