Schachter Award Winners 2025

We are delighted to announce two 2025 recipients of the Schachter Award.

The award provides postgraduate students with an opportunity to visit an international laboratory to learn new research techniques.

Ayesha Naeem is in the first year of a PhD in Molecular Cancer at City St George’s, University of London, where she is investigating how changes in the epigenetic landscape contribute to drug resistance in breast cancer. The award will support a visit King Saud bin Abdulaziz University to learn techniques in CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing. This knowledge will allow Ayesha to test the functional relevance of the targets she's identified and add real depth to her PhD project. Ayesha believes that learning these techniques in a lab with strong expertise in CRISPR would not only improve her technical skills but also give her a broader perspective on collaborative research.

Christina Thomson is in the penultimate year of a Molecular Pharmacology PhD at University of Aberdeen, investigating the characterisation of novel ligands of the FPR2, a potential immune-regulating target for cardiovascular disease. The award will support a visit to University of Gothenburg to learn techniques in primary human neutrophil assays. Testing these compounds will elevate the translational potential of Christina’s research and, she believes, will provide an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas, build her network and harbour potential collaborations for the future.
