Open now: BPS Content Editor Vacancies

We are seeking new volunteer editors for our Content Board, which oversees longform, blog and multimedia content produced by the British Pharmacological Society (BPS).

We are looking for editors at varying skill levels, career stages and areas of pharmacology to support the delivery of engaging and thought-provoking content. This is a chance to support our mission to promote and advance pharmacology and spotlight the exciting work of our members and partners.

Be part of a new content strategy

This is an opportunity to join our Content Board at the start of its development. We are currently an editorial team of nine, all of whom were originally on the Pharmacology Matters Editorial Board. With a new content strategy for 2024, we will cease issue-based publication of Pharmacology Matters content, and will instead publish both longform content and blogs on a consistent basis throughout the year. This will offer a steady stream of content to the community, while providing editors more opportunities to commission and develop new content.

This change in strategy will also allow us to develop video and audio content, with the potential for editors to get involved by interviewing pharmacologists, editing informative short videos, and potentially producing audio content such as podcast-style interviews. We are seeking editors who can begin in June/July 2024.

What you’ll do

  • Come up with content ideas: You’ll be on the lookout for exciting topics in pharmacology, wider science and healthcare, and pitching ideas to the board.

  • Commission content: You’ll work with authors and interviewees to bring ideas to life and keep them to content deadlines.

  • Peer-review longform content and multimedia: We’re looking for people who can review at least eight longform articles and/or 10 blogs and/or four pieces of multimedia content per year. We encourage you to write for us, too!

  • Attend Content Board meetings: You’ll catch up with your fellow board members at our three annual board meetings and our monthly informal ideas generation meetings. These are a chance to work together to come up with ideas, and to suggest ways for the board and content to improve.

Editors begin with a two-year term, with the opportunity to extend for one or two more years if agreed by the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor.

Who we’re looking for

We are open to applications from all BPS members, no matter what your level of skill or experience is. We’re looking for creative people who have lots of interesting ideas, and the time and ability to edit and commission content. You must work well with deadlines and be an enthusiastic team player who can offer around 1-2 hours per week to developing or reviewing content. This is a great opportunity to develop your content development skillset, and our experienced editors are happy to support your journey and provide mentorship to new editors.

We encourage applications from all, but we have some specific gaps in our current content board that we’re looking to fill. We’re especially keen to hear from:

  • People with video recording and editing skills
  • People with audio recording and editing skills
  • People working in industry
  • People working in clinical pharmacology
  • Undergraduates
  • Early Career Professionals

How to apply

Please fill out a short online form which asks about why you wish to join the board, and what areas of interest and experience you could bring to the board.

The deadline for submissions is 26 April 2024. Recruitment may close before this date in the event of having enough applications. A decision will be made in May 2024.

If you would like to discuss the role in more detail before applying, please contact BPS Communications Manager Chloe Gynne at chloe.gynne@bps.ac.uk
