Pickford Award

Background

Named in honour of Mary Pickford, the first woman to be elected to the British Pharmacological Society and the first to be appointed to a professorship in the faculty of medicine at Edinburgh University. This award has been established to assist members in the early stages of their career, with career enhancing opportunities that include, but are not restricted to:

  • Funding a short term independent research project to gain preliminary data before applying for other external funding
  • Funding a short term project with a view to publishing work
  • Visiting another laboratory at home or overseas to learn a new technique to bridge to current research

The prize

A sum of up to £10,000 awarded competitively to up to four individuals each year.

Criteria

  • Quality of the applicant’s career to date
  • Quality of the application
  • Quality of the project proposal
  • Potential interviews with shortlisted candidates

Eligibility

  • Applicants will:
    • Ordinarily be expected to have been a member for at least 2 years
    • Be within the first 6 years of a PhD award, or part-time equivalent (allowing for career breaks)
    • Preferably have presented at a Society meeting in the past 3 years
    • Have published at least two first author papers in the field of pharmacology
    • Be on, or aiming for, an academic career track
    • Be in full or part-time employment with at least 6 months’ pro-rata remaining on their current contract
    • Not at this stage be in a tenured position
    • Be supported by a letter from the holder of the Grant/Fund which pays the applicant’s salary
  • There are no restrictions on age, nationality, place of residence or work of nominees
