Finding personal grant funding​

These are just some of the major funders who provide funding to researchers at different career stages. It is also worth looking into other biomedical research charities and organisations to see what other schemes are available to fund the next stage of your research career. ​

British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation provide personal support for clinical and non-clinical cardiovascular researchers at all stages of their career and also provide grants for short and long term research projects, essential infrastructure and strategic initiatives.​

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK offer fellowships, bursaries, job opportunities and studentships for academic researchers and clinical scientists interested in cancer research. This includes fully funded fellowships as well as grants to advance individual projects.​

Daphne Jackson Trust

Daphne Jackson Fellowships support researchers in STEM, social sciences and related disciplines to retrain and return to research after a career break of two or more years, if taken for family, caring or health reasons. These Fellowships offer the opportunity to work on a research project on a part-time, flexible and salaried basis in universities and research institutes across the UK.​

Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (ESPRC)

EPSRC Fellowships aim to provide greater support to aspiring and current world-leading individuals who are delivering the highest quality engineering and physical sciences research to meet UK and global priorities.​

European Commission

The European commission offers ERC grants for frontier research, which are awarded to researchers of any nationality working in any field of research, as well as the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions - Research Fellowship Programme, which funds research and supports doctorates and training for researchers at all career stages.​

Medical Research Council

The Medical Research Council’s fellowships support the development of talented individuals to strengthen the UK research base, and enable the scientific community to respond effectively to current and future grand challenges in medical research.​ MRC fellowships are personal awards to support talented researchers at key transition points in their careers.

National Institute of Health

The NIHR Fellowship Programme support individuals on their trajectory to becoming future leaders in NIHR research. Their four fellowships have been designed to support individuals at various points of their development in becoming leading researchers, from initial pre-doctoral training to senior post-doctoral research.​

The Royal Society

The Royal Society provides a number of grants and fellowships for outstanding researchers, both in the UK and internationally.​

Wellcome Trust

Wellcome offers funding and other support at key career stages for researchers in biomedical science, population health, and humanities and social science. ​
