Zeinab Saade won first prize for ‘Avicenna’s Lab’.

Zeinab is from Lebanon and has recently begun studying undergraduate Pharmacology at Glasgow Caledonian University. Zeinab has been passionate about pharmacology since she was young and her goal is to become a pharmacologist so that she can find life-changing solutions to problems and save lives.

Zeinab told us:

This competition allowed me to combine my passions for pharmacology and art and I decided to paint the image that comes to my mind when I think of pharmacology. My painting conveys how drugs and medicines were produced in ancient times. I included Avicenna’s famous drawing of the body and its organs in the background of my painting because Avicenna played a major role in pharmacology and the study of medicines.

Second Prize: Neurotransmitters as drug targets

Shanali Thanthilla won second prize for ‘Neurotransmitters as drug targets’

Shanali is a fourth year medical student at Cardiff University and told us ‘I enjoy the problem-solving nature of medicine. As a student just beginning to appreciate the intricate processes that occur in our bodies, I am particularly keen to explore how drug targets and therapeutics are developed. Integrating this knowledge will hopefully help me deliver patient-centred care. To unwind, I enjoy baking, visiting coffee shops and taking long walks!’

Shanali says of her image:

Some major neurotransmitters and neural connections are shown in the image. It is important to appreciate the complex and interconnected nature of neuropharmacology.
