General and Advanced Receptor Theory (GART) 2019 workshop

What might the Roman philosopher, Lucretius, Paul Ehrlich and participants in a British Pharmacoligcal Society GART workshop have in common? An interest in the actions of drugs and hormones at receptors. This workshop introduces ideas about the mechanisms of drug action and how these can be quantified in a physically meaningful way. The workshop attracts postgraduate students and professional scientists working in any related subject area and a wider aim of the workshop is to promote networking and sharing of knowledge in pharmacology.

Each workshop has five lectures spread over one and a half days that provide a framework for tutorial discussions and quantitative exercises designed to develop understanding of the content. The lecture content is focussed on how the actions of agonists, antagonists and allosteric modulators can be quantitatively described using some simple algebra which is then used to inform data analysis and interpretation of experimental data. Concepts of efficacy, receptor constitutive activity and inverse agonism are discussed along with mechanisms of antagonist action.

Learning Objectives:

  • To increase understanding of fundamental pharmacological principles of drug action at receptors
  • To aid evaluation and interpretation of pharmacological data to allow accurate reporting
  • To enhance understanding of the mechanisms of drug action and identification of ways of improving experimental design and the drug discovery process
