I thought I would use this opportunity to reflect on the successes of our recent annual conference, Pharmacology 2021. The three-day event was a wonderful opportunity to discover the work of our members, and the diversity of that, across the full spectrum of pharmacology and therapeutics. For those of you able to join, I hope the meeting gave you the opportunity to reconnect with inspirational colleagues from around the world.
Pharmacology 2021 was the second annual conference the Society has held online. We took this decision earlier in 2021 because of the uncertainty of the pandemic. In retrospect, it was the right decision. At the time of writing, the COVID-19 case rates are still high and with travel restrictions in place, attendance would have been particularly challenging for our international members.
I am pleased with the turnout from both long-standing members and newer faces. We had more than 600 attendees joining from 41 countries, from a variety of career backgrounds and career stages. This year, 28% of those attending were undergraduates and 24% were early career members.
Thank you to everyone involved in making the meeting a success, in particular our VP Meetings, Cherry Wainwright, the Meetings Committee, and the Meetings and Events team. Your hard work to ensure our attendees had the best possible experience did not go unnoticed.
As we look to the future, we have several hybrid and in-person events in the pipeline. You can register now for our 90th anniversary celebration event, where we will hold 2 symposia honoring the scientific and societal contributions of Professor Sir Colin Dollery and Professor Sir Alasdair Breckenridge, both of whom sadly passed away recently. This meeting will also encompass our annual President’s lecture (by Proffessor Robert Langer, MIT) and the Gaddum lecture (by Proffessor Carlo Patrono). Join us on Wednesday 1 December at the Royal College of Physicians in London, or online.
Pharmacology 2022 is also on the horizon, and we’re excited to be hosting it in-person from the beautiful city of Liverpool from 13-14 September 2022. Though I am of course happy to see the conference visiting my home city, I assure you that Liverpool was selected independently! Make sure you save the date and we will be in touch with more information soon.
And that’s not all, as we will soon be launching the programme for the World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (WCP), taking place from 2-7 July 2023 in Glasgow, Scotland. Once you see the programme I am sure you will agree that the organising committee have done an amazing job securing the most exceptional pharmacologists and scientists from around the world to speak at the conference.
