The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. The REF was first carried out in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise. In this consultation response, the Society responded to draft guidance and criteria on making submissions to the REF 2021, issued by the UK’s four higher education funding bodies. The final panel criteria and working methods will be published in early 2019.
