My experience as a pharmacology student attending Pharmacology 2025

My experience as a pharmacology student attending P2025

Hey, I’m Lewis, a 4th Year Pharmacology undergraduate student at the University of Edinburgh. I joined the BPS at the start of my third year (September 2024), and my only regret is not getting my membership sooner. I was intrigued by the events organised by the BPS and decided to attend Pharmacology 2024, which was a fantastic experience. As a result, I was really looking forward to Pharmacology 2025 and immediately registered.

Conferences can feel a bit daunting as a student or ECR, especially when events are full of highly experienced pharmacologists. However, what I have learnt is that everyone is here for the same reasons: exchanging ideas with others, learning about new research and having a good time – whether you’re a first-year undergraduate student or a professor/senior director. Additionally, it may sound like a series of complex lectures, but from my experience it’s actually a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and discover what’s out there.

Attending Pharmacology 2024 was an excellent experience and for Pharmacology 2025, I had the amazing opportunity to be part of an ECR panel in a career talk with Prof. Manuel Mayr. Not only was this event very useful and inspiring, but it also shows how easy it is to get involved and get more out of BPS events. Also, I wouldn’t say public speaking is one of my strengths, so asking questions in front of the whole audience made me step out of my comfort zone – which was highly rewarding. Being part of an ECR panel allowed me to make connections with people who are further ahead career-wise. I’m at a stage where I must make important choices for my career and although there’s no “right choice”, people’s experiences are incredibly valuable in helping to make an informed decision.

Attending Pharmacology 2025 inspired me to pursue postgraduate studies in pharmacology because I was amazed by the ongoing research. Being part of this exciting and dynamic field of science makes me want to contribute to it. In fact, following my progression from attendee to ECR panellist, I am considering presenting my own research at Pharmacology 2026 because yes, this is one of the many other opportunities that the BPS provides. I cannot recommend these events enough to students and ECRs, especially since tickets are made very accessible. I would also recommend applying for bursaries to attend, as the BPS provides financial support – something that I have benefited from and am very grateful for.

I hope this inspires you to get involved with the BPS and attend Pharmacology 2026. The more I got involved, the more I got in return, so it’s definitely worth it!
