British Pharmacological Society Fellow Professor Mark Caulfield has been awarded a knighthood in the 2019 Queens Birthday Honours.
Professor Caulfield, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary’s University London, has been a leading figure in the emergence of genomic medicine and its role in the NHS, first as Chief Scientist, then latterly as interim CEO of Genomics England.
Professor Caulfield established a coalition of 3,000 researchers from across the world and assisted the NHS in the creation of the National Genomic Testing Agency, which will offer equitable access to 55 million people to the appropriate genomic tests via the National Genomic Medicine Service.
Speaking about the award, Professor Steve Hill, President of the BPS, said:
‘This is a tremendous and entirely appropriate award for one of our most eminent members. Mark has been responsible in large part for the emergence of genomic medicine as a force for improvements in public health. At the same time, he has been among a vanguard within the Society, calling for pharmacologists and clinical pharmacologists to recognise the opportunities presented by genomics for valuable and effective new treatments.
‘I would like to offer my congratulations to Mark, his family, and his colleagues at Genomics England and the William Harvey on this well-deserved honour. This is a wonderful recognition of the achievements Mark has led so far, and the promise of better healthcare to come.’
