Every year, the International Union of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) hosts World Smart Medication Day (WSMD) to highlight and promote safe and effective medication use and advance clinical pharmacology worldwide.
WSMD webinar on 7 May 2026
This year's event takes place on 7 May 2026, with the theme being 'Race, Ethnic and Socioeconomic Influences on Clinical Pharmacology'. IUPHAR will host a free webinar, bringing together international pharmacologists and experts to provide education and research on the theme. It will feature presentations from the winners of its student poster competition (see information on how to enter below).

Student poster competition
For the chance to present at this international webinar, students around the world are invited to submit a poster entry to their national pharmacology society.
UK students should submit their entries to the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) via clinical@bps.ac.uk by Wednesday, 25 March 2026.
Poster categories:
- General posters: open to all medical, pharmacy or pharmacology pre-graduate students.
- Research posters: open to all medical, pharmacy or pharmacology pre- and post-graduate students.
- International collaborative posters: open to all medical, pharmacy or pharmacology pre- and post-graduate students for collaborations between students who are each affiliated with different member societies.
Judging
The BPS judging panel will choose a UK winner for each category, and will then put them forward for the international competition.
All posters put forward by IUPHAR's national pharmacology societies will be judged for originality, relevance, message and universality by the IUPHAR Executive Committee and members of the IUPHAR Medical and Clinical Pharmacology Committee. Overall winners for each category will be decided and will be invited to present at the World Smart Medication Day webinar on 7 May 2026. Six prizes will be awarded by IUPHAR, two prizes in each category.
