Richard had the misfortune to begin his academic career as a biochemist. However, following an industrial placement in a neuropharmacology lab at Beecham W├╝lfing in Germany, he saw the light and completed a PhD on GABAA receptors with Mike Simmonds at The Square. He continued his work on ligand gated ion channels with two postdocs in the USA. His first independent position was in 1998 as a Teaching and Research Lecturer at the University Manchester. In 2007, his career changed direction and he became more involved in pedagogical development. His is currently a Reader (Teaching Focussed) in Pharmacology. His main interests are enquiry-based learning, improving feedback to students and the development of laboratory simulation software. He was awarded the BPS Student Choice Teaching Excellence Award in 2016 and the Rang Prize for Non-Clinical Pharmacology Teaching in 2017.
