Terms & conditions for awards, prizes, grants and bursaries

Please read the following terms & conditions before applying for any BPS prize, award, grant or bursary. Please also check for any specific terms & conditions on the individual prize/award/grant/bursary page.

How to apply

Applicants must be a member of the British Pharmacological Society. You can apply to join today.

Please check the individual prize, award, grant or bursary page for specific application eligibility, requirements and instructions.

How many things can I apply for, and how often?

Members can apply for as many awards, prizes, grants or bursaries as they wish; however:

  • There is a limit of one prize/award a person can receive per year. There is no limit to grants or bursaries, but priority will often be given to those who have not yet received one.
  • Previous award/prize winners will not be considered for the same prize/award again in subsequent years. Recipients of grants or bursaries may apply for the same again in subsequent years.

Review process

In most cases, applications are reviewed by the BPS Awards Panel; however, for certain prizes, awards, grants and bursaries, applications are reviewed by another BPS committee or group. Applications are anonymised before being reviewed by the Panel/committee/group. Members of the Panel/committee/group review applications against published criteria (see each award/prize/grant/bursary page for specific details) and submit their scores to their staff lead, who will collate the scores before sharing the outcome. Due to the high number of applications the Society receives, it is often necessary for the Awards Panel to divide into groups to review different prizes/awards. At least three members will review an award before a decision is made. If there is no clear winner between applications, two more members will be asked to review.

Those reviewing applications must declare a conflict of interest and will not take part in a review if:

  • They have applied or been nominated themselves.
  • They have co-authored a publication with one of the applicants within the last five years.
  • They share an active grant with one of the applicants.
  • They teach or supervise the applicant.

Applicants are informed of the outcome by email.

Unsuccessful applicants who are one of the first two runners-up and whose total score is at least 60% of the winning score will have their submission carried over to the next round of awards (usually the following year).

Payment

Please see the specific award/prize/grant/bursary page for details on any funds that may be awarded. Please note that some prizes and awards do not include prize money.

Winners/recipients will be asked to complete a payment form to provide bank details, allowing the Society to transfer any prize money.

Certain grants will require an invoice from the winner's institute.

If recipients do not take up their degree, research project or studentship, they must return the prize/award/grant/bursary.
