Whether you’re a BPS member or just part of the scientific community, we always want to hear about your projects, research, careers and opinions.
Journal publishing & peer review
Get involved in one of our three world-leading scientific journals, which together cover the full breadth of pharmacology.
Submit a paper
We invite you to submit papers of original research, reviews, letters to the Editor and more.
Find out more about our journals:
- British Journal of Pharmacology (BJP)
- British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (BJCP)
- Pharmacology Research & Perspectives (PR&P)
To view a list of specific topics we are currently seeking papers on, please refer to our calls for papers for all three journals.
Become a peer reviewer
Peer reviewers play a crucial role in ensuring our journals publish high-quality content. It’s a great way of giving back to the scientific community while also enhancing your own skills.

Content development
We are always looking to publish blogs, articles and social media content from our members and the wider scientific community.
Creating/writing content
If you're interested in creating content for us, you can pitch an idea. Need inspiration? Keep an eye on our blog and our digital magazine, Pharmacology Matters, to see the range of things people write about, and to see if there are any upcoming writing competitions to submit work to.
Join our Editorial Board
The Pharmacology Matters Editorial Board commissions, develops, reviews and helps publish our digital magazine content. We regularly recruit new members to the Editorial Board. Look out for opportunities on social media, in our newsletter and on our volunteer with us page.
Help shape the BPS
As a membership organisation, we must listen to our members and include you in decisions about how we operate and the work that we do.
Join a committee or advisory group
Represent your fellow members and have a say in how the BPS operates by joining one of our committees or advisory groups. It's a great way to share your perspective and help us further improve the work that we do. Committees and groups often recruit new members each year. View all our committees and groups to learn more about what they do and how you can apply to join. Look out for opportunities on social media, in our newsletter and on our volunteer with us page.
Join our Council
The BPS Council has ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the British Pharmacological Society’s activities, except matters which must be decided by a general meeting of the members. It includes our President, President-elect, Honorary Treasurer, elected Trustees (BPS members), and appointed Trustees (non-members).
Elections to Council take place each year. Any voting member of the Society can stand. Voting is open to all members except Undergraduate and Affiliate members, and election results are announced at our Annual General Meeting. Look out for election announcements in our newsletter and on our volunteer with us page.
Engage others
Public engagement
If you’re passionate about sharing your science with public audiences, you may be interested in volunteering to support our public engagement activities or hosting your own!
Public engagement resources
We offer a range of resources and ideas for public engagement activities. These are free to use, and are aimed at a variety of age groups.
Engagement grant
Looking for funds to help you build or develop a resource? Maybe you need some money to run an engagement event? Members can apply for an Engagement Grant worth up to £2,000 or a Seed Funding Grant of up to £250 for smaller projects.
Public Engagement Prize
This award recognises high-quality public engagement, including both that of pharmacology research and that of inspiring the public about pharmacology generally. It also raises awareness around the importance of demonstrating pharmacology across a diverse range of public audiences. Winners are awarded £1,000 and the opportunity to share details of their initiative at our Annual Meeting.
Student engagement (for students)
University is the ideal place to make new connections and start building your pharmacology network. Check with your university's student union to see if they have a student pharmacological society you can join. These student-run societies often host local networking and social events, providing an opportunity to meet other students in your department. If you are interested, you can usually also volunteer to help run the student society, or set up your own if one doesn't exist yet!
We offer various types of support to help university students engage with classmates from their own university and from other universities.
Student Society Fund
Undergraduate and postgraduate members can apply for up to £250 to support the development of pharmacology networks at their university or institution. This can include anything from organising a seminar, networking event, or interactive workshop, with the funds aimed at covering the travel and/or accommodation expenses for a speaker to attend.
Student Contribution to Pharmacology Prize
This prize recognises students' contributions to the promotion of pharmacology within their university. Winners receive a certificate and a year's free Early Career Membership.
Free BPS membership for undergraduates
Undergraduates studying a pharmacology-related course are eligible for free BPS membership for the full length of their studies! You'll join our community of over 5,000 members around the world and unlock exclusive discounts on events and training. You'll also be eligible to apply for awards and grants (see above), as well as scholarships and prizes.
Student engagement (for educators)
We offer various resources and ideas for public engagement activities, as well as an Engagement Grant worth up to £2,500 to support the development of a resource or the running of an event.

Being an educator

Innovations in education and engagement
Every year, at our Annual Meeting, we host a session on “Emerging innovations in pharmacology education and engagement”. The session is a chance for individuals or groups to showcase tools or resources that they have developed to aid in the teaching of pharmacology or to engage diverse audiences with pharmacological concepts. It also allows attendees to see the latest developed resources, get ideas, and talk to the creators. If you have a tool or resource you would like to demonstrate at our Annual Meeting, you can find out how to apply. Otherwise, you can register to attend our Annual Meeting to see the latest innovations.
Become an ambassador
The BPS Ambassadors Scheme is open to members who want to promote pharmacology and the British Pharmacological Society. The scheme provides support and funding for a wide range of activities that connect our membership and the international pharmacology community, as well as those that engage the public with pharmacology. The scheme is open to all BPS members, with the exception of undergraduate members.
