Dr Ali Hosin is a Specialty Registrar in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics and General Internal Medicine at UCLH, London.

What do you do? and what is a typical week for you?

I am a physician specialising in clinical pharmacology.  My weekly schedule is interesting and varied!  As well as caring for patients with acute medical problems requiring hospital treatment, I contribute to the safe and effective use of medicines in a number of ways. This includes through teaching, research, and policy work.  I teach undergraduates and postgraduates on themes including safe prescribing, hypertension, clinical trials, and drug development.  I have been a co-investigator in early phase clinical trials, and am undertaking research into digital health interventions.  I have also contributed to writing guidelines and evaluating applications for new drugs to be approved for use locally and regionally.  No two weeks are the same!

What qualifications and experience do you have?

  • Undergraduate medical degree (MBBS)
  • Intercalated BSc (iBSc) in medical sciences with pharmacology

What’s the most interesting aspect of your job?

I find the variety of the job hugely stimulating.  I am also heartened by the multidisciplinary teamworking and interaction with other professionals including pharmacists and academics.  The ability to achieve meaningful impact through expertise in pharmacology and therapeutics is very rewarding.

What are your research interests?

Evaluating the role of digital health technologies in common chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone seeking a career in clinical pharmacology?
