The British Pharmacological Society is calling for members to apply/nominate others for the role of our new Elected Trustee (Industry). Term of office: 1 January 2027 - 31 December 2029 (3 years)

The application deadline has been extended to 12 pm (GMT) on 21 October 2026.

The role is critical to the development of the Society, and we encourage all eligible members to put themselves forward. By taking on a leadership role, you will help the Society achieve its mission to promote and advance the discipline of pharmacology in all its forms, and deliver impactful work for the benefit of pharmacology and pharmacologists.

The Elected Trustee Industry will work collaboratively with the Trustees, Committee Vice Presidents and the staff team to ensure the successful delivery of the Society’s 2026-2030 strategy.

The Elected Trustee (Industry) supports the development and continued integration of pharmacologists based in the pharmaceutical industry and in biotechnology companies (“industry”) into the Society and ensures that the Society prioritises actions which will increase the relevance of preclinical and clinical pharmacology in industry. It is therefore important for the Elected Trustee to share their industry knowledge and networks. The Trustee will ensure the experience and needs of those working within commercial settings are represented during deliberations of policies and projects and promote their contribution to the scientific activities of the Society.

As a Trustee, the Elected Trustee (Industry) is a voluntary role in which the postholder must comply with the Society's Trustee Duties, Requirements and Commitments, which include abiding by the Society’s Code of Conduct for Trustees and Vice Presidents.

As a Trustee, you will be noted on the Companies House and Charity Commission websites as a Director and Trustee respectively of the British Pharmacological Society.

Along with those requirements and a general interest in and knowledge of the activities of the Society, this role also requires the following:

Responsibilities

In addition to the wider trustee duties set out in the Trustee duties, requirements and commitments (part B), the post-holder will be invited to provide input into a range of initiatives including:

  • providing guidance and advice on proposed projects, events and initiatives, especially those pertaining to issues of greatest importance to industry scientists in the field
  • contributing and collaborating with the Society’s committees and groups, including the Industry Subcommittee (by being a member of the sub-committee) to input into a range of initiatives, such as:
    • Early Career and Mid-Career Researcher training and career support
    • initiatives to support Society’s goals in widening participation in industry

Person Specification

In addition to being a Voting Member of the Society (Early Career Member, Full Member, Retired Member, Fellow, or Honorary Fellow), the applicant will need to demonstrate interest in or experience of the following attributes:

  • a member of the Society working in industry
  • actively involved in pharmacology and an appreciation of the contributions of all individuals working to develop, discover and ensure safe use of medicines
  • a keenness and ability to develop the Society’s engagement with industry
  • the ability to bridge the gap between scientific research and corporate governance within professional organisations in pharmaceutical and biosciences
