Deputy Vice President and Vice President (Clinical)

The British Pharmacological Society is calling for members to apply/nominate others for the role Deputy Vice President (Clinical), leading to Vice President (Clinical).

Term of office: Deputy Vice President (Clinical) 1 January 2027 – 31 December 2027, followed by Vice President (Clinical) 1 January 2028 – 31 December 2030

The application deadline has been extended to 12 pm (GMT) on 21 October 2026.

The role is critical to the development of the Society, and we encourage all eligible members to put themselves forward. By taking on a leadership role, you will help the Society achieve its mission to promote and advance the discipline of pharmacology in all its forms, and deliver impactful work for the benefit of pharmacology and pharmacologists.

Deputy Vice President

Term of office: 1 January 2027 – 31 December 2027

Role description

The Deputy Vice President role has been established to ensure succession planning and business continuity in the Society’s core committees. The Deputy Vice President is elected to hold office for the final year of the current Vice President’s three-year tenure. The individual will then go on to automatically succeed the Vice President for a three-year term as Vice President. This role will be a four-year commitment in total.

This role aims to support the Vice President Clinical to direct and guide the educational activities of the Society in serving the needs of the membership and broader pharmacology community.

Duties

To actively participate and contribute to the work of the Clinical Committee, any activities delegated to that Committee from Council, and assist the Vice President in undertaking their duties, including:

  • undertaking responsibilities for committee activities delegated by the Vice President
  • deputising for the Vice President in their role (as set out below)
    • leading on specific tasks agreed with Vice President, including providing strategic leadership to ensure delivery of the Society’s Clinical portfolio and to encourage the development of innovative resources and approaches that support the development of pharmacology skills and knowledge
  • promote and work with the Vice President to ensure that the activities of the committee
    adhere to the Society's vision for equality, diversity and inclusion.

Person Specification


Alongside a familiarity of chairing committees and a willingness to work in partnership with staff
to deliver the outcomes of the role, there are a number of specific qualities useful to this role:

Broad requirements:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • A demonstrable commitment to the Society’s objectives of promoting pharmacology, including clinical pharmacology. We recommend that all applicants consider the Society’s Strategy

Specific to the role:

  • A medical doctor specialising in clinical pharmacology

Alongside a familiarity of working with and chairing committees and being a current
member of the BPS, desirable qualities include:

  • Interest in the future of clinical pharmacology
  • Experience of education and training initiatives in clinical pharmacology
  • Interest in e-learning and developing novel education resources
  • Interest and involvement in clinical pharmacology research
  • Experience of leading in policy work
  • Willingness and approachability to deal with enquiries/requests from Trustees and
    staff

This role may take up to 1 day per month per year, which includes attendance at meetings and
liaising with the staff team.

Requirements

Candidates must be either Early Career Members, Full Members, Retired Members, Fellows, or Honorary Fellows.

All candidates must commit to the Society’s objectives of promoting pharmacology, including clinical pharmacology. We recommend all applicants consider the Society’s 2026-2030 strategy and how to achieve the goals outlined.

Vice President Clinical

Term of office: 1 January 2028 – 31 December 2030 (following the one-year Deputy Vice President role)

Role description

A prime responsibility of the post-holder is to chair the Clinical Committee and advise on matters relating to promoting and advancing clinical pharmacology. The Vice President leads on clinical
activities that are strategic priorities of the British Pharmacological Society. The Vice President ensures the Society is active in its support for training of CPT Specialty Registrars, through their
support of the StR Chair and Committee.

Duties

  • Chair of the Clinical Committee
  • Attend Executive Committee meetings approximately every four months
  • Attend Council meetings as a non-member
  • Ex-officio member of the Meetings Committee or delegated role to a member of the Clinical Committee
  • Member of the Royal College of Physician’s Joint Specialities Committee

Candidates will be either a Full Member, Retired Member, Fellow, Honorary Fellow, or Early Career Member of the Society. The applicant will need to demonstrate the following:

Responsibilities

During the 3-year term as VP, you will work with the Society’s staff, members and appropriate external advisors to formulate and guide, with regard to the mission of the Society (as directed
by Council), work to support the education and training of pharmacologists.

These will include:

  • Develop the clinical pharmacology annual programme of activities for agreement by Council.
  • Overall responsibility for coordinating with the Clinical Committee the clinical component of the annual meeting.
  • Ensures that the education and training activities for clinical pharmacologists and trainees are high quality.
  • Collaborating with the Editor-in-Chief of BJCP, to integrate and contribute the Society’s clinical activities with its journals wherever possible.
  • Overall responsibility for coordinating with the Annual Specialty Registrar training and workshop.
  • Liaise with other professional organisations and societies to further the clinical objectives of the Society
  • Ensure the Society's vision for equity, diversity and inclusion is maintained, including ensuring this is reflected:
    • in the committee composition
    • meeting and event activities of Meetings Committee and the Society
  • To support the appointment of the Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
  • Ensure that the interests of clinical pharmacologists are taken into account in the activities of other Society sub-committees.
  • Oversee preparation of the Clinical Committee annual operating budget and account as required for value for money spent.
  • Develop and oversee Society policy on the education and training of clinical pharmacologists, within the Society's general mission and objectives, for agreement by Council.
