Response to the GMC draft framework on credentialing

The GMC is planning to introduce a process of credentialing in 2019 that will recognise expertise and provide training opportunities in areas of practice where there may be significant patient safety issues or where training opportunities are insufficient or do not provide adequate flexibility to support effective service delivery. The draft framework sets out proposals for credentialing, including how credentials would be identified and implemented. The proposal is that optional components within specialty training or substantial areas existing outside training will become credentials.

Our response noted that credentials have the potential to enable flexibility regarding development. More specifically, we recommended exploring credentials in prescribing/complex polypharmacy, experimental medicine and pharmacogenomics. We also identified several issues that will need to be considered as part of developing the credentialing model to ensure that credentialing has a positive impact.
