I have worked in the field of Pharmacology and Toxicology since 1980, initially in the pharmaceutical industry, and for the last 30+ years in academia. Each year I teach to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Pharmacology using a breadth of pedagogical modalities have been tailored to the different student groups, with appropriate assessment strategies. I have a number of postgraduate teaching qualifications and have received several teaching excellence awards. My research has been acknowledged by the award of a D.Sc. (published work) in 2013, and currently have a h index of 39 (Web of knowledge). I have supervised 21 PhD students (12 as co-supervisor) and 5 M.Sc. students. I’ve established multiple educational programmes within the discipline of Pharmacology which have seen the FTEs grow from 35 in 1995 to 225 in 2025. In 2010, I published a textbook (Principles of CNS Drug Development: From test tube to patient). I’ve contributed to a number of committees over the years, most recently the Irish Network of Healthcare Educators and Editorial Board of the IUPHAR Pharmacology Education Project, and am part of the IUPHAR Core Concepts in Pharmacology project.
