Awarded BMedSc (Hons), 1977, University of Western Australia, in which investigated ovarian blood supply and endocrinology in the pregnant rat (published in J Endocrinology). ICI Research Fellow Cardiovascular Medicine, Birmingham University, 1988, studied relationship of blood pressure to retinopathy (weak) and microalbuminuria (strong) in hypertensive patients (Lancet); haemodynamics in human hypertension. Australian Atherosclerosis Society UWA Research Fellow, 1992-5, studied high density lipoprotein and cholesteryl ester transfer, lipid disorders, statin pharmacology; alcohol effects on blood pressure, coagulation and low density lipoprotein oxidisability. Established Western Australia’s first Lipid Clinic and was a founding Consultant on the first Stroke Unit. Principle investigator for Perth site of multicentre landmark international randomised clinical trials: PROGRESS (perindopril/indapamide vs placebo) and SPARCL (atorvastatin) post-stroke. Published analyses of clinical dose response (MJA, BJCP, Lancet, JACC), identifying provisional estimates of ED50 of a wide variety of essential drugs, based on clinical endpoints and outcomes, in particular statins, aspirin, beta-blockers.
