UK Pharmacogenetics & Stratified Medicine Network

Promoting and advancing the use of stratified and personalised medicine in the clinic, to offer patients the most appropriate and safest drug, at the optimal dose, at the start of their treatment.

The UK Pharmacogenetics & Stratified Medicine Network (UKPGx Network) is a free-to-join network of clinicians, academics, industry scientists, policy-makers, students and anyone with an interest in pharmacogenomics and stratified medicine. The Network aims to create and support connections between its members to help advance the fields of stratified medicine and pharmacogenetics to offer patients the most appropriate and safe drug, at the optimal dose, at the start of their treatment. As of August 2023, the UKPGx Network is managed by the British Pharmacological Society.

Definitions

'Pharmacogenetics'

'Pharmacogenetics' (sometimes known as 'PGx' or 'pharmacogenomics'*) is research into how a person’s genes affect their response to a particular medication. This research aims to improve drug development, efficiency and patient safety.

*Technically, there is a difference between 'pharmacogenetics' (which refers to studying an individual's single gene variation) and 'pharmacogenomics' (which refers to studying all of an individual's genes); however, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

'Stratified medicine'

'Stratified medicine' (otherwise known as 'personalised', 'precision', or 'P4' medicine) uses specialised diagnostic tests to group patients according to their disease subtype to determine the most appropriate treatment.  It is also used to predict the risk of disease and then offer preventative treatment, or suggest lifestyle changes, to minimise the effects of disease.

Past UKPGx events

Each year, the UK Pharmacogenetics & Stratified Medicine Network (UKPGx) holds an Annual Open Meeting outlining the latest developments in the field. We also host a selection of workshops, webinars and other events that invite leading multidisciplinary experts to come together to review and offer solutions to the challenges of adopting genomic medicine into the clinic.

See below for details and videos of past events.
