Dr Catherine Sherwin is the vice chair for research at the Department of Pediatrics, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine/Dayton Children's Hospital

What do you do, and what is a typical week for you?

I am the vice chair for research at the Department of Pediatrics, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and Dayton Children's Hospital. This involves mentoring faculty to advance academic productivity. I provide oversight, implementation and facilitation of research for the Department. I meet with many different people to identify and promote opportunities for collaboration, not only within my own institution, but also globally. I also undertake my own research and teaching program in pediatric clinical pharmacology.


What qualifications and experience do you have?

My background and qualifications include:
 
  • A PhD in pediatric clinical pharmacology
  • Three years of postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric clinical pharmacology
  • Board certification in clinical pharmacology from the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology
  • ​Certification as a Principal Investigator from the Association of Clinical Research Professional
  • Almost 10 years’ experience of overseeing pediatric clinical studies and trials
I have a productive career in publishing, dissemination of my research and obtaining grants in my research area of pediatric clinical pharmacology.


What’s the most interesting aspect of your job?

I enjoy meeting new people who want to undertake research and helping to guide them to achieve that goal. I work with researchers from varying backgrounds, who are at different stages of their careers. From helping a medical student undertake a research scholarly activity, to helping an experienced clinician implement and run a successful clinical trial.

What are your research interests?

My main area of research is in pediatric clinical pharmacology, with the goal of advancing the use of therapeutic agents to improve health outcomes. I utilize pharmacometric (modeling and simulation) methods and undertake clinical studies and clinical trials with a primary focus in neonates.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone seeking a career in clinical pharmacology?

The area of clinical pharmacology is an amazing field and can lead to many opportunities. This includes potential careers in the regulatory area (eg, US FDA), the pharmaceutical industry and academics. Be open to the opportunities around you and develop your network within the field. This will enable you to choose your own path for your career.
