Pharmacology Matters is recruiting for a Deputy Editor in Chief

Pharmacology Matters (PM) is the Society’s digital magazine. It publishes updates on Society activities and topics of interest across pharmacology and across scientific research more broadly. PM is led by an Editor in Chief, Margaret Cunningham, and is supported by 20 volunteer editors working across a range of pharmacological areas. The Editorial Board helps with commissioning, editing, and shaping the scope of articles for publication in our three issues per year.

The Deputy Editor in Chief is a new voluntary position, created to support the magazine as the Editorial Board - and therefore content generation - grows. The term for this position runs from 12 July 2021 until 31 December 2022. At the end of this term, there would be a performance review and if completed successfully, the Deputy Editor in Chief would be expected to take up the Editor in Chief role for a two-year term (with the support of a new Deputy Editor in Chief). The Editor in Chief role would run from 1 January 2023 until 31 December 2024.

Duties of Deputy Editor in Chief

  • Working closely with and attending monthly catch ups with the Editor in Chief (Margaret Cunningham) and the Managing Editor (Emma Needham) to help decide strategic direction for PM

  • Assisting with commissioning of articles, deciding themes, and reviewing articles for scientific accuracy

  • Leading on selected activities as agreed with the Editor in Chief – e.g. organising promotional activities for the magazine, leading on themed issues

  • Attending Editorial Board meetings (three per year) and leading on any appropriate agenda items

  • Attending other Society meetings when needed to give input to relevant projects

  • Helping with recruitment of new members of the Editorial Board

  • Advocating for the magazine, including promoting new publications and encouraging submissions

Candidates should:

  • Have strong written and editorial skills

  • Be enthusiastic and proactive

  • Have an eye for interesting and topical content

  • Have good networks in the pharmacology community, which they are willing to draw on for commissioning content

  • Be active members of the Society

If you would like to informally discuss the role in more detail before applying, please contact our Editor in Chief, Margaret Cunningham.

To apply, please email the following to Pharmacology Matters’ Managing Editor Emma Needham by 5pm (UK) Monday 31 May 2021:

  • CV

  • Cover letter (max 500 words), outlining why you believe you would be a good fit for the role and your experience relevant to the role

  • Vision statement (max 400 words), outlining where you think PM should be in 5 years, including ideas for development

The expected start date for the position is Monday 12 July 2021.
Excellent candidates are encouraged to apply, especially people from under-represented groups.
