Matthew’s research focuses on the pharmacology of blood platelets. He studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and continued there for doctoral studies on receptor-mediated calcium signalling in human platelets with Stewart Sage. He moved to the School of Physiology & Pharmacology in the University of Bristol, working with Alastair Poole, before being appointed to a Lectureship, then Senior Lectureship, at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow in Pharmacology at Jesus College Cambridge. Matthew is currently Director of Teaching in the Department of Pharmacology, leading curriculum development, teaching innovation and delivery to >400 medicine, veterinary medicine and science undergraduates each year. In 2024, he was awarded the BPS’s Rang Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Matthew’s research group studies the interplay between platelets and coagulation, and how this can be modulated by drugs.
