I obtained a 1st Class Honours BSc (1980) and a PhD (1984) in Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow. I did my postdoctoral research at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, USA before returning in 1986 to a lectureship in Molecular Pharmacology in the Dept. of Pharmacology at Glasgow. After 5 years I moved to the University of St Andrews where I was appointed a lecturer in Pharmacology in the School of Biology and then the newly recreated School of Medicine in 2002. I was promoted to a personal Chair in Medical Science and Education in 2007. I was the Vice Dean for Medicine (Teaching Dean) at St Andrews with responsibility for the UG medical programme. I returned to the University of Glasgow in 2015 where I am now the Head of a School of Life Sciences in a College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. The School offers 18 different UG Life Sciences degrees, including Pharmacology.
