Professor Steve Watson

Steve Watson is a British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences and Cellular Pharmacology in the University of Birmingham and Head of the Birmingham Platelet Group.  Steve’s research interests are centred on cell surface receptors and their signalling pathways, with a special interest in tyrosine kinase-linked receptors.  Steve has published over 400 original articles and reviews.  Steve is a founding Trustee of the Platelet Society (previously UK Platelet Charity).
 
Steve graduated in Pharmacology from the University of Leeds in 1980 before undertaking a PhD in the MRC Neurochemical Pharmacology Unit with Les Iversen in Cambridge graduating in 1983. Following postdoctoral studies in Burroughs Wellcome, North Carolina, Steve moved to the Department of Pharmacology in Oxford, firstly as a Demonstrator and then as a Royal Society University Research Fellow.  He moved to the University of Birmingham as a BHF Chair in 2004.  Steve proposed and edited the first eight editions of the TiPS Receptor and Ion Channel Nomenclature Supplement which was the predecessor of the BPS Guide to Receptors and Channels.  Steve was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2002 and to an Honorary Fellowship of the BPS in 2012.
