Hull York Medical School Launches an MSc in Pharmacology and Education

Pharmacology continues to grow as a discipline, playing a vital role in medicine as we strive to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. In response to this, Hull York Medical School launched a new programme in 2021 - MSc Pharmacology and Education - to ensure pharmacologists are equipped with the knowledge and skills to respond to healthcare challenges now and in the future. This follows the successful launch of their MSc Pharmacology and Drug Development in 2018, which, with the support of its founding corporate partner Reckitt - a leading global hygiene, health and nutrition company with global brands such as Nurofen and Gaviscon - has been running since 2019. Pharmacology as a specialty is relevant to scientists, physicians and all areas of healthcare. As such, it is important to consider the specific educational needs of different student cohorts in order to optimize the delivery of pharmacological principles to all relevant disciplines at all stages of their career. The MSc in Pharmacology and Education aims to develop and inspire the next generation of pharmacology educators to deliver exceptional teaching, assessment, and further educational research.

Hull York Medical School is a unique partnership between the Universities of Hull and York and the NHS Trusts in the surrounding areas. The MSc in Pharmacology and Education is ideally placed to utilise expertise from all elements of this partnership. The pharmacology and clinical pharmacology components are taught by researchers and clinicians at the University of Hull and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trusts. These researchers are at the forefront of pharmacology, therapeutics and drug design, with teachers on the course involved in world-class pre-clinical research and groundbreaking clinical pharmacology. Students on the programme also benefit from the expertise of specialists at the Hull Health Trials Unit who run a module exploring the different elements of trial design and phases of clinical trials, giving students a thorough understanding of what is involved and the regulation required.

The education components of this innovative programme are delivered by University of York based academics at the Health Professions Education Unit. Through groundbreaking research, the unit aims to raise the standards of health professions education, to inspire students and enhance understanding. Students on the Pharmacology and Education programme will explore educational theories to support informed learning and teaching activities through the learning and teaching and assessment and feedback focused modules.

The final component of the Pharmacology and Education programme is the independent research dissertation module. Here, students have a chance to utilise what they have learnt in the taught components of the programme and undergo an independent research project to help advance pharmacology education and student experience. Students are introduced to the key concepts in quantitative and qualitative research to form a research question, plan methodology, collect data and analyse in order to critically evaluate teaching and assessment methodology. Projects are offered by academics within the Hull York Medical School, but we are also keen to explore collaborations externally to enhance the learning experience and better students’ knowledge and understanding of the field.

Students on the programme can also gain teaching experience alongside their learning to put into practice and further the knowledge they have acquired. This allows participants to develop their skills and they can use this to apply for Associate Fellowship or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (depending on experience) through the University of Hull’s recognition scheme for Advance HE Fellowship.

The Hull York Medical School is keen to train the next generation of pharmacologists and health professionals and this programme hopes to help pharmacology, as a discipline, continue to grow and inspire scientist and healthcare professions to specialise in this area.
